Dry Ice Do's and Don'ts

Do's...

  • Use gloves and or ice tongs to handle dry ice.
  • Store in a Styrofoam cooler or an ice chest to ensure longevity.
  • Store in a deep freeze type freezer without a frost-free feature.
  • Place on a wooden cutting board when working.
  • Let excess dry ice expire naturally or place in warm water.

Don'ts...

  • Handle dry ice with bare hands. It will cause burns.
  • Allow direct contact between dry ice and skin, especially wet skin. It will cause burns.
  • Put in mouth or swallow. It will cause burns.
  • Put in air tight containers or bottles.
  • Store in a frost-free refrigerator or freezer. Unless protected by Styrofoam insulation, the air circulation in such units will cause dry ice to disappear more quickly.
  • Place on a tile or Formica counter top. A wooden cutting board should be used.  Dry ice will destroy the bonding agent.
  • Dispose in a sink or disposal. The extreme cold will harm sink disposals, toilet parts, and pipes.
